Japanese Studies Conference in Europe


The 9th conference of the Nordic Association of Japanese and Korean Studies (NAJAKS) will be held in Bergen, Norway, on August 21-23, 2013.The conference theme is Translation, Education and Innovation.

Ethnomusicologist Keith Howard (Professor, SOAS) is one of the Keynote Speakers for NAJAKS 2013, and Japanese Performing Arts SIG member David Hebert (Professor, Grieg Academy) is one of the conference hosts. Music performances and art exhibitions are being planned, and we also intend to organize a paper session on performing arts in East Asia. The deadline for abstract submissions is March 1st, 2013.

Welcome


Welcome to the blog for the Japanese Performing Arts Special Interest Group (SIG) of the Society for Ethnomusicology.

This blog will be used to post occasional announcements approved by the SIG chair.

The Japanese Performing Arts – Special Interest Group was established within SEM in spring of 2012 in order to bring together scholars, performers, and other enthusiasts interested in Japanese performing arts broadly defined. Membership in the group is open to anyone interested in the study and performance of Japanese performing arts.

Mission Statement

The mission of the Japanese Performing Arts – Special Interest Group is to support the study of Japanese performing arts, primarily through the sponsorship and promotion of discussion, events and publications related to Japanese performing arts. 

The group does the following:

-       explores what encompasses Japanese performing arts, continuing to question the definition of Japanese(ness)
-       provides a forum for scholars and performers of Japanese Performing Arts
-       offers an organizational basis to plan and execute events that focus on Japanese Performing Arts
-       helps in the coordination of paper sessions, conferences, concerts and other special projects
-       advocates for the promotion of Japanese performing arts
-       strengthens professional ties between scholars, performers, teachers, and professional organizations dedicated to Japanese performing arts
-       provides an information network where scholars can share and promote publications and activities related to the study of Japanese performing arts
